Teflon (PTFE) Bellow Seals

Teflon Bellow Seals (also known as PTFE Bellows Mechanical Seals) are corrosion-resistant mechanical seals designed for handling highly aggressive chemicals, acids, solvents, and hazardous fluids. Instead of a conventional spring, these seals use a flexible PTFE (Teflon) bellows to maintain sealing force, making them ideal for applications where metal springs would corrode or clog.

🔷 Key Features

  • Made with PTFE (Teflon) bellows for superior chemical resistance
  • Non-metallic design — suitable for highly corrosive environments
  • No dynamic O-ring → minimal shaft wear
  • Self-cleaning bellows reduces clogging
  • Handles toxic, volatile, and reactive fluids safely
  • Low friction and smooth operation
  • Maintenance-friendly construction

⚙️ Main Components

  • PTFE Bellows — provides flexibility and sealing force
  • Rotary Seal Face — rotates with the shaft
  • Stationary Face (Seat) — fixed in housing
  • Gland Plate / Housing — mounts seal to equipment
  • Drive Mechanism — transmits torque to rotary face
  • Secondary Seals (if required) — static sealing

💧 Working Principle

The flexible PTFE bellows acts as both the spring and secondary seal. It applies axial force that keeps the rotating and stationary faces in contact. A thin fluid film forms between the faces, preventing leakage while reducing friction and wear.

🧪 Materials of Construction

Metal Parts: SS304, SS316, Hastelloy (optional)
Bellows: Virgin PTFE / Filled PTFE
Seal Faces: Carbon, Silicon Carbide, Tungsten Carbide
Elastomers (if used): PTFE / Viton / EPDM

🔹 Types of Teflon Bellow Seals

• Single PTFE Bellow Seal

  • For general corrosive applications
  • Cost-effective solution

• Double PTFE Bellow Seal

  • For highly hazardous or toxic fluids
  • Uses barrier fluid for zero leakage

• Balanced PTFE Bellow Seal

  • Suitable for higher pressure conditions
  • Reduced face wear

• Unbalanced PTFE Bellow Seal

  • For low to moderate pressure services
  • Economical design

🏭 Typical Applications

  • Chemical processing plants
  • Acid and alkali transfer pumps
  • Fertilizer industry
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Pesticide & agrochemical plants
  • Petrochemical industry
  • Effluent treatment systems
  • Dye and pigment manufacturing

⭐ Advantages

  • Excellent resistance to corrosion and chemicals
  • Ideal for aggressive and hazardous fluids
  • No spring corrosion or clogging issues
  • Low maintenance requirements
  • Long service life in harsh environments
  • Suitable for high purity applications

⚠️ Limitations

  • Not suitable for very high pressure compared to metal bellows seals
  • PTFE has lower mechanical strength than metals
  • Temperature limits depend on PTFE grade
  • Requires proper installation to avoid bellows damage
